Inspired by the colossal statues of Ramses.The french sculptor Frederic-August bartholdi formulated the idea of huge statue of a women bearing torch.she was to represent progress-Egypt carry the light of Asia,to use bartholdi`s own words,he presented his idea to khedive ismael,Who loved the idea of grand gesture and was thrilled with the concept.

However after two years of sketching and making the models,Barthholdi was told that  khedive ismael decided that the project  was too expensive and the light to Asia was sent to  the new york ,where she became the lady of liberty.
